I’m back…at least for now

Hello my friends in the blogosphere, assuming there are any of you left. I’m just checking in after a, whoa, ten month hiatus. Yes, I know, far too long. Most of you have probably moved on to a blog with more, shall we say, blogging? But, have no fear, I’m coming back to do some more frequent, informal ramblings, in addition to the occasional longer, more formal editorial. So, here’s what’s new in my life since we last talked (actually, since I last sent typed text to a vast void of uncertainty called the Internet):

  • I’ve finished 10th grade (woohoo!)
  • I’ve started 11th grade (boohoo!)
  • In between I had a fun summer made up of a program Georgetown University, vacationing in Greece and Boston (with a brief stint in Martha’s Vineyard), and, of course, chilling in my hometown, NYC (which really means sitting on my ass and playing Halo 3 all day)
  • Seeing a ton of movies (including The Dark Knight, Burn After Reading, and Rachel Getting Married)
  • Watching tons of TV shows (including old-favs like Heroes and The office, but also newbies for me like Weeds, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Dexter)
  • Obsessively following the election, whether at HuffPo, The Daily Show, or SNL (Tina Fey, I LOVE YOU!)
  • Updating my tumblelog, Freedmania!, which you all should read in between these blog posts for a taste of how what I think is important on the web (hint: if it involves videos of overweight cats, I probably like it)
  • Watching as Wall Street falls apart around me while Mr. Hank Paulson desperately tries to Scotch-tape is back together
  • Waiting to get the new MacBook Pro tomorrow after my old one broke
So yeah, that’s about all I have to say for now. So, my dear, dear readers who are still with me after all of my lack of blogging commitment, remember that this is No Ordinary Times, and that in extraordinary times come extraordinary blog posts from very un-extraordinary people, in addition to a $700 billion bailout plan. Oh, and stay classy.

      Cheers,
      Aaron

P.S. Chag sameach to my Jewish brethren who will be enjoying tonight’s meal in a disheveled hut of sorts (read: sukkah).

Covering the iPhone Launch

Fifthavenue Vert051906On Friday, June 29th (better known as “iDay”), I will be at the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York (directions and map, Google Maps) covering the launch of the iPhone. I’ll be there with my friend and co-host for The Teen Tech Buzz podcast, Austen, doing interviews and stuff for the podcast, and also for Macworld. We’ll be there from about 5-6:30 PM, and I’ll be trying to manage doing work for The Teen Tech Buzz, work for Macworld, and my personal attempts to try out the iPhone, so I’ll be pretty busy. But, if you’re there, I’d be happy to interview you and even get you quoted in Macworld.

Also, I’d just like to point out that my employer, Macworld, has launched a blog devoted to, you guessed it, the iPhone, called iPhone Central. I haven’t written anything for it yet, though I may start to after launch. So, keep your eyes peeled and maybe you’ll see my byline sometime soon.

Mini-vacation in San Francisco

I just wanted to let you all know that for my mini-Shavout/Memorial-Day-vacation, I will be out of town and in San Francisco. This means that I will not be posting any Daily Digests from today to Friday, and I will also not be blogging about the trip (fine, a 1% chance I will).

Also, on the matter of my Daily Digests, I know that they’re very, well, short, but I just don’t think they’re worth the effort. So, for now, consider the Daily Digest dead, or at least on a “leave of absence) for an undisclosed time.

Twitter fraud, Jaiku, and blog realizations

Twitter Fraud

It was inevitable. It was doomed to happen from the start. Yes, today, the first major case of Twitter fraud occurred. Twitter, as I blogged about before, is a site where you can simply say what you are doing at any given moment, and track what your “friends”* are doing. Well now, Leo Laporte, head of the TWiT.tv podcast netcast network, has had his identity hijacked on Twitter. This was done because, after Laporte recently ditched Twitter for Jaiku (which I’ll get to later), someone else created an account with his same username.

To me, this is just a case of what happens when you create services that allow someone to be “you” without any physical proof. Of course, this really only applies to celebrities (which Leo Laporte is in the geek world). This is why more services really need to incorporate OpenID.

Jaiku

After reading Leo Laporte’s blog post on it, I decided to check out Jaiku. Jaiku is very similar to Twitter, in the sense that it allows you to say what you’re doing and follow what others are doing. It even features a very similar, if slightly more cluttered yet featured, interface. But, Jaiku also has more than Twitter. For one, you can comment on other people’s updates, put little icons in your updates, and use the phone client. Jaiku also has the very cool feature of fetching posts form RSS feeds that you specify, and then turning them into updates. This works great for adding updates for blog posts, Flickr photos, and even feeding in Twitter updates.

Of course, Jaiku does have its faults. One, is that it’s much smaller than Twitter, so much less people are on it. Also, it doesn’t yet support posting via IM, and I couldn’t get my cell phone verified with it. Jaiku’s API is also very new, so there isn’t yet a great desktop client for it, such as what Twitterific is for Twitter. Jaiku seems to have a lot of promise, but I don’t think I’ll be devoting a lot of time to it right now.

Blog Realizations

I’ve had this blog for about 15 months now, and I rarely post on it. The truth is, well I have better things to do with my limited free time. For example, instead of writing this post, I could be:

  • Writing a MacUser post, which a) would get a avstly larger audience than this post, and b) I would actually get paid for.
  • Editing my podcast, which gets many more times the listenership than the breadefrship of this blog, is improitant enough to get me to meet a Dell PR rep, gets me free stuff to review, and got a 6-month ad deal.
  • Evaluating the Apple TV for my podcast.
  • Sending a review copy request for Guitar Hero II, and sending podcast interview requests.
  • Getting off my tush and reading something, such as The Looming Tower or Barron’s. Sure, this isn’t more productive, but it gets me off the computer and “stretches my brain.”

So, the point is, why should I be blogging now, with a teeny-weeny audience. Forget the lack of payment, who even is going to read this? I guess this is the realization that all bloggers avoid, because it causes their entire world to self-destruct in on them. In the end, why do I or anyone else have a blog, a tumblelog, a Twitter, etc? I mean, I almost never check my Facebook, my tumblelog and Jaiku are just portals to other services which I don’t even use that much (del.icio.us, Flickr, etc.), so what’s the point of it all? To put my existence on every corner of the web? Make my ego bigger? I honestly do not know.

So, I guess my posting on this blog won’t be up to “blogworthy standards,” whatever that means. For a more blog-like blog, see my friend Austen’s Netsua, Cyrus’s blog, or even Shira’s Bungalow Babe. But for now, by dear but few readers, I bid you adieu (at least until my next post, which will be in God-knows-how-long).

*”Friends” being the MySpace definition, which is people who you simply add to an online list of contacts, or people who can view your page of some sort, Entirely different from the modern English definition.

AaronFreedman.com is up and running!

Hello blogosphere! I know that it’s been a while, but I’ve finally updated by blog, formally Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of The Internet, into a full-fledged website, AaronFreedman.com. I admit that I didn’t and still don’t put too much effort into this blog, but I wanted to change my website to be more of a portal for my work, and less about the blog. So, I decided to evolve my blog into more of a website, complete with a dedicated front page. But, let me go through all of the changes to show you exactly what’s new:

1. Dedicated home page: Yes, aaronfreedman.com now goes to a dedicated homepage.

2. Updated bio: My bio has now been updated and is much more comprehensive.

3. New Wordpress and K2: I upgraded Wordpress from 2.0 to 2.0.5 and K2 from 0.8.x to 0.9.1.

4. New header: My friend, Austen, created my new header image, which looks great.

5. News sidebar: My new sidebar now has RSS feeds from The Teen Tech Buzz and MacUser, my Flickr photos, and more.

Still, even with all of the new changes, there’s still more to be done. Technorati needs to be set up with this blog, I need to edit my Blogrool, and the sidebar doesn’t display right on the blog page. But, eventually, everything will fall into place. But, here’s a brief update on what’s going on in my life:

  • I went to a Matisyahu (an orthodox-Jewish regge singer) concert on Saturday night. It was friggin’ awesome! Of course, it took from 6:30 until 8 for the opening act to start, which was terrible (it was Mr. Lif, a bad rapper who said the government knocked down the world trade center and got booed off the stage).
  • I got Last.fm and iLike, two great social-music services
  • I’m in 9th grade at high school!
  • Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel Magazine is publishing some of my photos from my family’s summer vacaion trip to Israel last year alongside my dad’s article on it. Check it out in the next issue!
  • I’m going to Paris over winter break, which’ll be loads of fun

So, that’s all for now, but stay tuned for my next posts.

Blog Updates

Hey guys, I know it’s been about a month now since my last post, and I’m sorry for not posting more frequently. There’s a lot of stuff on my plate, such as blogging on MacUser, writing for TeenSpeak Online, and managing my normal life. But graduation is days away, which means much more free time for personal blogging. Right now, I’m just going to post some quick updates on stuff that’s happened and what’s going to come.

For those of you that don’t know, about two months ago I was hit by a car. I’m OK now, all I have are two small scars on my face that didn’t even need to be stitched up. It happened on a quiet side street in Manhattan and yes, I was jaywalking.

I just wanted to remind everybody that the majority of my blogging goes into MacUser, so if you’re into Macs, check it out.

Also, I am a staff writer on the website TeenSpeak Online, which is news and editorials for teens by teens. My first and only article, Why Bush can’t be impeached, is still on the front page. Also, I will going to a discussion at the United Nations on Friday, which will be pretty cool.

As for what’s coming on the blog next, expect reviews of the play Awake and Sing (which I saw the day it won the Tony), the movie Bee Season, and the book Kavalier and Clay. Also, I’ll be posting coverage of my summer vacation to London, Rome, and Israel in August, and I’ll try to put up cool things I find online and elsewhere whenever I have the chance.
