Shooting War: Comics, meet the Internet

Whoa, this is pretty much scary as hell. It’s 2011. We’re still in Iraq. Iran’s not only got nukes, but using them. The world’s a disaster. Yes, that pretty much sounds like a cheap “future-of-the-world apocalypse terror” story, but this one has a few catches. For one thing, it has a sense of realism. Basically, Bush screwed up the country and pretty much the world, and now McCain’s president and Iraq’s such a mess he can’t get us out. Also, there’s a whole tech and future of journalism angle, involving the main character, Jimmy Burns, as a young blogger in NYC who ends up accidently streaming a live video of a Brooklyn Starbucks being blown to pieces by a suicide bombing. After becoming an overnight sensation from his footage being streamed live on national television, he gets sent to videoblog Iraq by the eerily CNN-like Global News Network. And did I mention that it’s also a web comic? Yep, that just about sums up Shooting War. If you can’t get it online, a print version will be released in 2007. Overall, it’s a really thought provoking and creepily plausible future of America and Iraq, while at the same time combining it with the future of technology and journalism, all in a comic format, online.

Oh, and by the way, I’m blogging this directly from the Word 2007 beta, which, surprisingly, doesn’t totally suck.

Update: Actually, I’ve discovered my first Word 2007 flaw — any document posted to a Wordpress blog gets its date set to December 1969. Ouch.

Office 2007 Beta is for Mac? Or only WPCs?

Alas, Office 2007 beta is Windows-only, but I was able to use the PC laptop that my high school gave me to try it out.

That story may not be too farfetched. After all this has been described by our President as a ‘generational struggle.’

I recently posted a different approach to Iraq. How about respecting and listening to our professional military and veterans?

QuestionItNow - Still in Iraq is now one year old. Sadly, we are not in a position to change the title of this blog. It is doubtful we will be able to do so any time soon.

The Iraq war was sold to the American people and the world as part of a greater global ‘war on terror.’ Strangely, this has turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. While Iraq was not a haven for terrorists before we invaded, it has now become a rallying cry, a recruitment tool, and a training ground for the next generation of fanatical radical terrorists. The latest National Intelligence Estimate has confirmed what many progressive thinkers and questioning Americans have long feared, “…the continued U.S.-led occupation of Iraq is increasing the threat of global terrorism by spurring radical Islam.”

Still In Iraq examines America at war in the post 9/11 world. We are living in an era unlike any other in our history. Our leaders have declared a perpetual ‘war on terror’ by ensuring we will have plenty of enemies to fight in this ‘generational struggle’. It looks like we plan to pass this war on to our children, and very possibly their children, in the same way the Bush administration is content with passing this war onto the next president. (more)
